MR. FERNANDO MERIDA

ABOUT ME
Certification: Composite Science 7 – 12
Hello, I am Fernando Merida. I am originally from Laredo, Texas. I am a senior at UT Austin pursuing a degree in Chemistry. I fell in love with teaching at a young age, and I am excited to be teaching and learning along with y'all this semester. I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know each other.Â
CAREER OBJECTIVE:
My goal is to teach composite science to high school students in central Texas to acquire the necessary experience to pursue my dream of becoming a principal in the future.
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
My philosophy is based on two core beliefs: intelligence is not static, and education is a vital tool to teach students how to be confident and informed citizens. I decided to become a teacher because I find the current educational system to be highly favorable for a select group of students. It is my goal to engage all students in meaningful thinking and learning through project-based instruction. I believe project-based instruction allows students to exercise many important skills like collaboration, research, revision, critical thinking, and public speaking skills that will carry on past the classroom. Furthermore, I am a big proponent of building a student agency. In today’s political and social climate, I believe students need critical thinking and problem-solving skills to be active members of change in their communities.
